چکیده

Abstract. Ice losses from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets have accelerated since 1990s, accounting for a significant increase in global mean sea level. Here, we present new 29-year record of sheet mass balance 1992 to 2020 Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise (IMBIE). We compare combine 50 independent estimates derived satellite observations temporal changes flow, volume, Earth's gravity field. Between 2020, contributed 21.0±1.9 mm level, with rate loss rising 105 Gt yr−1 between 1996 372 2016 2020. In Greenland, is 169±9 but there are large inter-annual variations balance, ranging 86 2017 444 2019 due variability surface balance. Antarctica, continue be dominated by West Antarctica (82±9 yr−1) and, lesser extent, Peninsula (13±5 yr−1). Increasing rates of ice mass loss from the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets revealed by GRACE

[1] We use monthly measurements of time-variable gravity from the GRACE (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment) satellite gravity mission to determine the ice mass-loss for the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets during the period between April 2002 and February 2009. We find that during this time period the mass loss of the ice sheets is not a constant, but accelerating with time, i.e., that ...

Mass balance of the Antarctic ice sheet.

The Antarctic contribution to sea-level rise has long been uncertain. While regional variability in ice dynamics has been revealed, a picture of mass changes throughout the continental ice sheet is lacking. Here, we use satellite radar altimetry to measure the elevation change of 72% of the grounded ice sheet during the period 1992-2003. Depending on the density of the snow giving rise to the o...

The Dynamic Response of the Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets to Multiple-Century Climatic Warming

New calculations were performed to investigate the combined response of the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets to a range of climatic warming scenarios over the next millennium. Use was made of fully dynamic 3D thermomechanic ice sheet models, which were coupled to a two-dimensional climate model. The experiments were initialized with simulations over the last two glacial cycles to estimate the...

Mass balance of polar ice sheets.

Recent advances in the determination of the mass balance of polar ice sheets show that the Greenland Ice Sheet is losing mass by near-coastal thinning, and that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, with thickening in the west and thinning in the north, is probably thinning overall. The mass imbalance of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet is likely to be small, but even its sign cannot yet be determined. Lar...

Overview and Assessment of Antarctic Ice-Sheet Mass Balance Estimates: 1992–2009

Mass balance estimates for the Antarctic Ice Sheet (AIS) in the 2007 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and in more recent reports lie between approximately ?50 to -250 Gt/year for 1992 to 2009. The 300 Gt/year range is approximately 15% of the annual mass input and 0.8 mm/year Sea Level Equivalent (SLE). Two estimates from radar altimeter measurements of elevation change b...
